UHS Successfully Launches OpusClinDoc®’s
Web-Based Clinical Documentation Software
Three Acute
Care Hospitals Gain Advantages of Online Bedside Patient Charting
AUSTIN,
TEXAS, JUNE 9, 2003 — Opus Healthcare Solutions,
Inc., a leading provider of Web-based clinical data management
software, and Universal Health Services, Inc., today announced
the successful implementation of OpusClinDoc® in
three UHS acute care facilities. OpusClinDoc® is
a Web-based patient charting software that allows clinicians
to enter, capture, and retrieve patient data in a multi-disciplinary,
electronic lifetime medical record at the patients’ bedsides.
UHS
reports that the installation of OpusClinDoc®, which
will replace the hospitals’ paper-based patient charting
systems, was “one of the most successful launches of
any new clinical software product we ever experienced,” says
Linda Reino, Chief Information Officer of Universal Health
Services, based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
“Knowing
that change can be challenging, we set reasonable expectations
for the first day: we asked each nurse to chart only two
patient assessments using OpusClinDoc®,” explains
Reino. "But the nurses found charting using the Web-based
architecture to be so much faster and easier than on paper,
that they charted every patient admission and shift assessment
online. This is especially remarkable considering that many
of these nurses had never even turned on a computer before.
”The
three UHS facilities using OpusClinDoc® are Northern
Nevada Medical Center in Reno, Lancaster Community Hospital
in Southern California, and Doctors’ Hospital of Laredo
in Texas. Each facility has adopted an aggressive rollout
schedule, adding new installations of OpusClinDoc®
on additional floors and new patient assessment capabilities
every few weeks.
“UHS’ Web-based vision makes it one of the most
progressive, far-sighted healthcare organizations today,” says
Tim Rhoads, President and CEO of Opus Healthcare Solutions. “The
company truly understands and embraces all of the many advantages
that Web technology has to offer today’s budget-conscious
and patient-focused healthcare facilities.”
“OpusClinDoc®’s Web-based architecture
is the key to all of the software’s progressive capabilities,” explains
Rhoads. “It frees clinicians from time-consuming paper
and non-Web-based software systems. Unlike non-Web-based
clinical software products, OpusClinDoc®’s
truly unique patient charting functionality improves charting
speed, ease-of-use, legibility, accountability, security,
accessibility, compliance, and interdepartmental communication.”
Reino reports, “The reaction of our clinicians at
our pilot hospitals has been fun to watch. They are excited
to utilize the system and quickly adjusted to keying in the
patient assessment information online. With OpusClinDoc®
we can see our vision of returning the clinician to patient
care and improving the patient documentation process beginning
to take shape. With more accurate and up-to-date clinical
information readily available, our patients can receive improved
patient care and UHS can achieve improved hospital operations.”
“The
quick user acceptance of this system has challenged my staff
to utilize the OpusClinDoc® architecture tools to
build additional assessment components faster and the hospital
personnel to equip more departments with wirelessly enabled
mobile devices. That’s a nice problem to have,” comments
Reino. “Our facilities know that we are committed to
their success and to making this clinical application a compliment
to how they perform patient care. In fact, one of the most
frequent questions that I have to answer is ‘When do
I get the new clinical system?"
